It’s awesome to start looking at traveling COTA job trends and numbers. The traveling COTA industry can change quickly. Where the hot jobs are and what settings are in highest demand for travelers is not the same year to year. As you are deciding where to go next or if you are even ready to take the leap, knowing the market is very important.
In the past, the only way to find out this information was actually calling recruitment companies. Not only is this time consuming, you have to know the right questions to ask and you have to hope the recruiter you got on the phone is telling you the full truth.
But no longer. We are thrilled to have this resource for you so you have a great resource to see what the traveling COTA job trends look like for you today. This is a compilation of dozens of agencies, big and small, that shared their data with us so we could create something really special for you- traveling COTAs!

COTA Travel Job Openings by State Summer 2019
When you start researching or talking to traveling COTA companies one thing you will hear is “We staff in all 50 states”.
As you can see below, that is just not true. While they might be able to staff in all 50 states hypothetically, that does not mean there are actually traveling COTA job openings in all 50 states.
This map is a compilation of a large percentage of the whole entire traveling COTA job market. Across all of the USA there are around 29 COTA travel jobs open at one time. Eee! That’s tight! California is holding the trophy for having the most needs right now, and New York is a state that stays pretty consistent with having at least a few jobs open for our most flexible travelers (hint: great state to get a license in!)
🌡️ What this means for Traveling COTA this Summer…flexibility is key!
The COTA travel market has been consistently competitive the last year or more. The market seems to have cooled back down this quarter, so keep an open mind for your next adventure!
COTA Travel Jobs: What Nomadicare Recruiters are saying…
The Travel COTA Market is cold right now, but I hope it gets better toward the end of the year! California is your best bet at the moment, but I expect for it to improve with the changes that are occurring near the end of the year with billing! [My advice to travelers is] being as open as possible here and go where the jobs are.
It is super super tough and not getting any better. Be open to the states where we see jobs at and getting those licenses.
To COTA Travelers…stay open minded and flexible. It may get better with the changes to Medicaid.
What Nomadicare Recruiters said in Spring 2019…
It is warmer than it has been lately, but if a [traveling] COTA is not willing to go just about anywhere, specifically California, then it’s hard to place them.
Get’m while they’re hot. This market will likely taper off, so now is the time to book something where you have more options! Go to California!
It’s pretty dry. [Traveling] COTAs cannot be location specific and need to be willing to go anywhere. [In the next three months] I don’t see it getting much better.
I’d say it’s a cold market. [Traveling] COTAs really need to be open to many states and settings.

Our take at Nomadicare…
Never give up! The traveling COTA job market seems to have a swing in the right direction this quarter, but the market is competitive and concentrated in certain states in the U.S. (but hey, California and New York might be looking good!). A traveling COTA is usually required to have two years of experience before facilities will accept them as travelers as well, which requires a little more prep work, flexibility and open mindedness when being a traveling COTA. This is not a travel position that is new grad-friendly.
It is more than likely that travel opportunities for COTAs will be in a SNF setting, so stay flexible there as well.
Our advice to our Traveling COTAs: Be as flexible as humanly possible! If you’re open to anywhere, any setting, open to different pay and benefits, there’s a good chance a rockstar recruiter can get you a position. If you’re ultra flexible and thinking of traveling in the next month or two, definitely get a recruiter on your team to help guide you though the opportunities out there for you, especially if you’re licensed in CA or NY!
