States with Jobs
Fall 2019 has shown a slight decrease in the travel PT market since summer - our hottest quarter yet! Overall, PT is still looking strong.
Compared to February 2018 (there were 312 jobs nationwide), we are today sitting around an average of 456 jobs for travel PT. That is a steamy market right there, which puts the opportunity to see the country in your hands!
Enjoy the high but don’t get cocky - The market goes up and it goes down. This is a great season to enjoy the abundance of opportunities but don’t burn bridges or relationships by acting like the industry revolves around you. Be empowered, not entitled. 😉
Be brave and travel to your bucket list locations - Some seasons are slower and we get to follow the jobs. Some seasons give us a chance to be brave and leap into dream locations. Take the leap now to go locations that are exciting for you instead of playing it safe.
Compare pay and talk to several recruiters - Your speciality is in demand. Make sure you work with 3-4 recruiters so you are able to hear about all the jobs that could benefit you.
Each company has unique jobs to tell you about - Ask for pay packages up front and compare pay so you know you are getting what you are worth.
Still be open to SNF jobs - Remember that the best jobs go to the most flexible travelers! Sometimes the most memorable assignments are the ones you never thought you’d love!
It’s Fall - Consider there are more holidays in these 3 months than any others and plan accordingly to make sure you are receiving your hours each week to get your full per diem. If you are ok with working the major holidays it certainly helps your profile to get selected for an interview. It shows the manager you are willing to help out their staff who would like to have time off with their families.
Show up for your recruiter - The world may be your oyster for travel, but remember that your recruiter is hustling to get you the best placement possible! Know the difference between an empowered traveler and an entitled traveler. Be a great communicator and show up as a kind and professional partner to them, so they want to go the extra mile for you.
That means more jobs and less competition for each job. It is an extra hot season to enjoy traveling and having extra leverage in picking top pay packages.
When one might hear travel therapy companies say, “We staff in all 50 states”.
What this means: The agency is legally set up with the ability to staff in all 50 states.
What this does not mean: The agency has jobs in all 50 states.
We surveyed dozens of companies to create this map. It represents a large percentage of the travel PT job market. Across all of the USA there are around 456 open travel PT jobs at one time and very few states have no jobs at all.
California is holding the trophy for having the most needs right now and that is a state that stays pretty consistent with having jobs (hint: great state to get a license in!) Massachusetts and Illinois are also looking great this season.
While SNF will most likely always have the market share of jobs, it’s a great idea to gain experience in many different settings. Many people ‘in the know’ are whispering about home health becoming a growing area for jobs in 2020 because of the Medicare payment models that will shift in 2019. This is a great season to apply to home health jobs and start becoming skilled in that setting.

November 2018 - August 2019
“PT is definitely hot, hotter than any discipline right now. Across all disciplines, there will be states that are stronger than others, but overall the PT market is as hot as it's ever been.”
“I don't see the market cooling off anytime soon. I think we'll continually see the supply and job count to stay where it is, if not improve some.”
“How many submittals does it take - depends on if you're a new grad. If you are, it might take a couple more submittals to get an interview. I would say probably around 5 submittals to get an interview. It also depends on setting, but for a PT with experience, between 1-3 submittals. It's pretty solid right now.”
“Try something new, you might like it. Be open to everything!"
Be brave and take that leap to a dream location! This is a hot market for true travelers who:
Know their best defense is options. They are always staying in communication with multiple recruiters, so they are never caught without an option when option A doesn’t go as planned.
Are brave and adventurous! They are not trying to “travel” next to their hometown.
Are savvy with working with many companies and stay professional so they don’t burn bridges.
Know that sometimes contracts get canceled, that this journey is unpredictable, and they embrace it and roll with it.
Are prepared for interviews to make sure they are standing out.
Understand SPEED can be everything. They know what they want. They can look at pay packages and make decisions fast, so their resumé gets to the top of a stack!
Most importantly, they utilize resources that are here for them! They use Nomadicare to get matched with vetted recruiters who hustle for them. They also use Nomadicare’s location matching so they are talking to the right companies that have the contracts they want.
