Market Growth

What does this mean for you, our adventurous and brave travelers?

Fall 2019 has shown a slight decrease in the travel Rad Tech market since Summer. Compared to June 2019 (there were 64 jobs nationwide), we are today sitting around an average of 54 jobs for travel Rad Techs. That is getting a little low after the summer season.

Flexibility is the name of the Rad Tech travel game.

Submit to 5-8 jobs at once and work with several recruiters from several companies that you like. Different companies have different jobs so you need to work with 3-4 when the market is this tight.

Be very open - To any and every location. (helpful hint: don’t only look at San Diego or Austin😉)

Get experience before you travel - As a travel Rad Tech, it is recommended that you have at least two years of experience before you travel. If you are a new grad, you are at high risk for not landing a travel assignment until you have some experience under your belt. You also risk getting placed in tough (non new grad appropriate) assignments, contract cancellations, and companies underpaying you and pushing the bill rate down.

Consider certifications in an additional specialty - Any cross training is always a huge plus! Even if you aren’t certified, experience in other specialties is very valuable. Facilities are looking for the travelers that can do it all.

Be nice to your recruiters - Your speciality is not in demand for many states. Recruiters have to work 3x as hard to get you in a placement, and too many Rad Techs on their list hurts their productivity (thus their paycheck). You want them to like you and to want to hustle for you. Be a great communicator and show up as a kind and professional partner to them, so they want to go the extra mile for you!

Extend - If you’re already in a travel position you like, see if you can extend!

What does this mean for the market?

Fall 2019 - the market temperature is cooling down. What was once a hot market is seeing a cool breeze sweep through the Travel Rad Tech world. That means less jobs and more competition for each job. It is a tougher season for new grads to try to be travelers.

When one might hear travel therapy companies say, “We staff in all 50 states”.

What this means: The agency is legally set up with the ability to staff in all 50 states.

What this does not mean: The agency has jobs in all 50 states.

We surveyed dozens of companies to create this map. It represents a large percentage of the travel Rad Tech job market. Across all of the USA there are around 54 open travel Rad Tech jobs at one time, and many states have no jobs at all.

California and Texas share the trophy for having the most needs right now, and are both states that stay pretty consistent with having jobs (hint: great states to get licenses in!) Washington, Montana, Minnesota, and Massachusetts are warming up this season too.

What Nomadicare vetted recruiters are saying

“Cooling down, unless they have cross experience with CT. There are just not a lot of jobs out there.”

“Make sure YOU are the one that wants to take this assignment. And any cross training you can get! Even if you're not certified CT, but have CT experience, you can still get those jobs!”

“Just not a lot of jobs out there - they just usually combine them with CT, it’s hard to find JUST a Rad Tech job. They’re really low right now.”

“How many submittals? -It just depends.. about 3 or 4 times lately. Sometimes you get lucky and you submit them through the back door and they get it right away! It depends on the person, the timing, and the need.”

“If they [Rad Techs] are applying to places that don’t require licensure, they should move quick!! A lot of times travelers want to think about it for a while. You should try to do the thinking before you start traveling.“
