OT Compact and SLP Compact Licenses for Travel Therapists

The OT Compact and SLP Compact can make travel therapy feel a lot more possible, but the details are moving quickly.

This is good news. Compacts can reduce paperwork, shorten timelines, and help travel therapists say yes to more assignments. But not every compact is at the same stage, and not every member state is actively issuing privileges yet.

That is why Nomadicare treats compacts as part of licensure planning, not a shortcut you should assume will work. Start with the Licensure Guide, check the official compact pages, then use Vetted Recruiter Matching or Travel Therapy Jobs when you know where you can move.

What is the OT Compact?

The OT Compact is designed to let eligible OTs and OTAs practice in other compact member states through a compact privilege. It can be especially helpful for travel OTs and COTAs who want more location flexibility.

The official OT Compact map is the place to check current member-state status. AOTA reported on April 15, 2026 that 34 OT Compact member states, with Indiana, Ohio, Maryland, Minnesota, Virginia, and West Virginia issuing privileges as of the AOTA April 15, 2026 update. That means the compact is real and moving, but travel therapists still need to check whether their home state and target state are ready.

What is the ASLP Compact?

The Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact, often called ASLP-IC, is the compact pathway for eligible audiologists and speech-language pathologists. For travel SLPs, it can eventually be a big planning advantage.

As of May 17, 2026, the ASLP-IC homepage said 37 ASLP-IC jurisdictions have enacted legislation; registration is open for licensed practitioners in Louisiana, Ohio, and West Virginia. The ASLP-IC FAQ also says assistants are not eligible for compact privileges, and that school credentials may still be separate if a state or school system requires them.

Why this matters for travel therapists

Travel therapy jobs can open and close quickly. If your license is ready, you can move. If your license is not ready, the job may be gone before your paperwork catches up.

Compacts can help, but only when the details line up. Your home state, target state, license status, background check, state fees, jurisprudence rules, and system onboarding can all affect timing.

Nomadicare’s licensure guide currently tracks hundreds of specialty-state licensure records, with many states landing in the 4-9 week planning range and some taking longer. That is a good reminder: license timing is not a tiny detail. It can decide which jobs are actually available to you.

Common compact mistakes

  • Assuming a compact member state is already issuing privileges
  • Assuming a compact privilege replaces every state-specific requirement
  • Ignoring school credential requirements for SLP jobs
  • Waiting until a perfect job appears to check licensure timing
  • Letting a recruiter submit before you know whether you can start on time

None of those mistakes mean travel is too hard. They just mean travel therapists need better planning tools.

How Nomadicare helps you plan compact licenses

Use Nomadicare’s Licensure Guide to compare timelines by state and specialty. Use Job Alerts to watch states where you are already licensed or can get licensed quickly. Use Travel Therapy Jobs to compare real openings by specialty and state.

Then use Vetted Recruiter Matching to connect with recruiters who understand that licensure is part of the job strategy, not an afterthought.

FAQ

Can COTAs use the OT Compact?

The OT Compact is designed for OTs and OTAs when eligibility and state participation requirements are met. Check the official OT Compact site before planning around it.

Can SLPAs use the ASLP Compact?

No. The ASLP-IC FAQ says assistants are not eligible for compact privileges.

Should I wait for compact privileges before traveling?

Not necessarily. Compact privileges can help, but single-state licenses are still common in travel therapy. Use Nomadicare to compare timelines and jobs before deciding.
